Diphenhydramine is a first-generation H1 antihistamine used to treat:
1. Allergic reactions (e.g., hay fever, hives, rhinitis)
2. Common cold symptoms (e.g., sneezing, runny nose)
3. Motion sickness
4. Nausea and vomiting
5. Insomnia (as a sleep aid)
6. Parkinsonism and drug-induced extrapyramidal symptoms
7. Cough suppression (antitussive effect)
Diphenhydramine crosses the blood-brain barrier, causing sedation and drowsiness, which is why it’s also used as a nighttime sleep aid and in combination cold medications.
