Cetrimide BP/USP

Cetrimide is a quaternary ammonium compound used as an antiseptic, disinfectant, and surfactant. It is primarily used for topical and surface disinfection and in veterinary and cosmetic formulations.

It is bactericidal, especially against gram-positive bacteria, and also exhibits some activity against gram-negative bacteria and fungi. Cetrimide is commonly used:
For cleansing wounds and burns
As a skin antiseptic
In mouthwashes (in low concentrations)
In shampoos and creams (e.g., anti-dandruff, antiseptic)
As a preservative in pharmaceutical and cosmetic products
In disinfection of surgical instruments

🧬 Mechanism of Action:
Cetrimide acts by disrupting microbial cell membranes, leading to leakage of cell contents and cell death. It also acts as a surfactant, aiding in emulsification and cleansing.
